What are the Most Important Things A Nurse Must Not Forget for an NHS Career in the UK?

Okay. You may be a nurse from India or Philippines or Zambia or Zimbabwe. Maybe you are working in the Middle East, having a successful nurse career in Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar or Bahrain. You may be working in your own specialties in a popular hospital in Singapore, or Dubai or Abu Dhabi. You may be a very experienced Nurse in Sydney or Ottawa or Hamilton. Maybe you are a recent entrant to nursing career, from Kerala. Irrespective of your backgrounds, gender, country of origin, country living now or nationality, there are certain cardinal rules you may have to always keep in your mind, when trying for Emigration to the UK (England, Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland) or immigration into the UK. Why do you want to move to the UK? You should pose this question to yourself. Your motive is the prime.

Motive is something that causes a person to act. It is the reason for doing something. You may weigh in your prime motive behind looking for or securing a UK nurse job. Is your motive a successful nursing career in the UK? For some, it is career advancement, get experienced in the best NHS Trusts in the UK, get the expertise and skills from an advanced and competitive environment. For some, it may be earning better salary, career advancement being pushed behind. For others, quality of life and standard of living alone are more important than the nursing job itself.

Yes; your motive is the prime factor you may take into account. And choose your location and the NHS Trust/ hospital, based on your motive.

Many international nurses, looking for UK recruitment choose NHS Trusts/ hospitals in the low cost locations where the cost of living may be comparatively low. This is not a bad choice or criterion. At the end of the day, you may be able to save a bit more when compared to other. The cons are relatively modest infrastructure and amenities, schools etc.

Many overseas nurses opt in for world popular Trusts (for example, Cambridge University NHS Trust) and the quality, infrastructure, whether it’s a referral hospital, whether it is a teaching hospital etc as the criteria. Now many choose such locations and Trusts for 3 reasons:

  1. World Class Educational facilities for the children
  2. Youngsters choose such Trusts for a fabulous experience and career advancement.
  3. Connectivity
  4. Infrastructure

Even some prefer remote locations. If you go for such locations, the property / house rents are relatively cheaper. However, you may have to sacrifice a little on infrastructure, modern amenities, connectivity etc.

Is it free recruitment? That is what many international nurses consider when it comes to UK recruitment options. However, most of the NHS recruitments are free offered by recruiting agencies.

Many nurses consider the relocation packages, offered by various Trusts. Our advice is simple. This is relatively a short-term attraction. When you choose a Trust/ location of the NHS hospital, it is advisable to weigh in/ give primacy to your long-term objective/ motive.

Whichever your criteria are, whatever prime motive for recruitment you have, you may choose recruiting agencies with great history and experience of UK recruitment.

Specialism/ specialty of a nurse matters most. You may look for opportunities for your specialty or the area of experience. Always check if any Trusts/ recruiting agencies offer interviews for your specialism areas.

When you choose an employer, your motive matters. And it really matters!
